The game: SCUBA HUNT. Your mission: to decipher puzzling codes and accomplish unusual scuba skills with a twist all within the timeframe of 65 minutes. Can you rise to the challenge?
By now we’ve all heard of the famous escape rooms – one small space, a series of clues, locks and codes, and as much brainpower as you can muster. Now scuba divers have taken this a step further adapting this style of game to be played beneath the waves.
Scuba Hunt is the ultimate underwater mashup. Where most traditional Cozumel dive shops take visitors out on daylong 2-tank trips on the island’s famous reefs, Scuba Hunt is a different 1-tank close-to-shore experience that doesn’t consume your entire day. In fact, the entire experience can be completed in 2 hours making it a novelty dive for those wanting a no-rush shore excursion or diehards wanting to squeeze in a third dive after their reef charter.
Go with the Cozumel Flow: As a popular Caribbean island, Cozumel is a Mexican dive destination suitable for all levels of divers. With the second-largest reef system in the world, Cozumel is home to 26 types of coral and over 500 fish species, all of which play an integral part in the island’s identity.
The shop is located in the El Centro part of Cozumel, at the iconic seafront restaurant Hemingway’s. Equipment rental is available and games are offered every half hour until 5:30 PM pending availability.
The dive site is about a 2-minute boat ride from the coast. The perimeter of the course has been zoned with surface buoys. The maximum depth is 5.8 meters (19-feet). Due to Cozumel’s notoriously strong and unpredictable currents, divers are required to have their Open Water certification AND be absolutely comfortable and confident dealing with current. As such, the shop provides a very conservative 4:1 guide to guest ratio to reinforce our commitment to safety.
Scuba Hunt is part scavenger hunt, part labyrinth and part escape room involves teams of two tasked with the mission of navigating 90 gigantic concrete blocks spread out over a 1000-foot course in a natural submerged maze.
Together divers will find clues without a map or compass. Each clue requires teams to do unusual scuba skills and decipher puzzling codes. Divers have a 70-minute time limit to beat the clock and collect enough correct answers to open a lockbox with a prize at the end of the game.
Bring your A-game as you prepare to venture into scuba diving’s newest team sport!
