Do you have an aspiring marine biologist in the family? Is your best friend and ocean fanatic? Are you a scuba diver? If so do I have the perfect drink for you…
Ladies and mermen, get ready to drink like a fish as I present to you the utterly delicious and incredibly realistic looking – jellyfish shot.
If you are a sea lover at heart, this absurdly awesome Irish cream shot brings to life the magic of the ocean. The jellyfish shot gets its name mainly from the effect of a few drops of grenadine which create tentacles running through the drink and thus jellyfish appearance.
I had first caught wind of the illustrious jellyfish shot during my employment at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. It was a hot commodity drink among the Aquarists, and I mean how could it not be, given that one of our biggest passions is the underwater world and everything in it!
Ingredients:
Kitchen Material:
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Servings: As many as you want!
In a transparent shot glass combine ½ creme de cacao liqueur and ½ amaretto liqueur. Assisted by a spoon, float enough Bailey’s on the surface to cover the shot. Add a few drops of grenadine using a turkey baster or small spoon. The grenadine will sink to the bottom through the Bailey’s giving the appearance of a small jellyfish descending through the glass.
It might take you a few tries to get your shot to look like a jellyfish, but trust me it’s worth it, plus you will have fun drinking away your mistakes.
The jellyfish shot is made possible by the variation in densities of the four liquids used to make the drink. Density describes how compact or concentrated a material or substance is. In the jellyfish shot, Bailey’s Irish Cream is less dense than the Amaretto and Creme de Cacao allowing it to float on the surface of the drink. Likewise, the grenadine is the thickest of the four liquids and as such immediately sinks to the bottom of the shot creating the jellyfish-like appearance.
On top of looking super cool, I was pleasantly surprised to taste how delicious the shot was when I made my first batch over the Christmas holidays. Joey, my husband, who is not a big fan of milky liqueurs like Irish Cream even tried one. Whether you’re out camping or hanging out indoors during the dead of winter, jellyfish shots are sure to make you the star of the sea and get the celebrations started!
