In unprecedented times like these, keeping your kid’s brain busy can be difficult as there is so much going on in the world. Joey and I are strong believers that sparking creativity promotes positive thinking and motivation, and no matter what you do, we could all use a bit more of that these days.
At the moment, many of us are juggling remote work, summer activities and finding ways to keep everyone entertained at home. And as challenging as it may be, come September school and home-schooling will come into the picture. YIKES!
Through Dive Buddies 4 Life we are always brainstorming ways to create the opportunity for ocean education and ocean literacy.
When was the last time you thought about breathing? Thanks to marine photosynthesizers, like plankton and seaweed, the ocean produces over half of the world’s oxygen (National Ocean Services, 2020). And what about food and weather? Well, the ocean plays a large part in regulating those as well.
Being scuba divers Joey and I love the underwater world and understand how important and fragile this environment is to our very existence. Together we’ve compiled a paperback and online colouring book to help parents and kids explore the underwater world from their living room or kitchen table.
As strong advocates for scuba diving and ocean education in Canada, our book affords parents the opportunity to add a dash of colour and a splash of water to their kid’s summer activities all while promoting ocean literacy.
Sharks, Turtles & Underwater Things has been created from underwater photographs taken on our scuba diving adventures all over the world, broken down into simple patterns, allowing a child’s imagination to run wild. Each page features the name and sketch of a salt or freshwater animal, their real-life image, and a fun educational fact. This book is a wonderful way to dive into the underwater world all while learning about the magnificent critters that call it home.

Readers’ Favorite is the fastest growing digital book review and award site. They have earned the respect of renowned publishers such as Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Harper Collins, and have received the “Best Websites for Authors” and “Honoring Excellence” awards from the Association of Independent Authors. Sharks, Turtles & Underwater Things was fortunate enough to be reviewed by their team and here are their thoughts:
Sharks, Turtles & Underwater Things is written and illustrated by Joey and Ali Postma. In this ‘Dive Buddies 4 Life’ coloring book, you will find more than just adorable pictures to color. Each page has actual underwater photographs of the sea animals with a black and white replica to color. Along with the pictures of each animal, there is also a fun fact box that will help the young reader learn some unique traits and skills about the sea creature. How long can some sea lions hold their breath? What is a coral reef made of? How is a jellyfish different from other animal species? Do all turtles have hardened shells? How do sharks know when there are other animals near them?
Sharks, Turtles & Underwater Things by Joey and Ali Postma is a unique coloring book that I would recommend to anyone of any age. The gorgeous photographs are taken by the authors as they explore underwater life while diving. The illustrations are beautiful replicas of the pictures that can be colored by the reader. My absolute favorite thing about this book is the fact boxes. There are numerous things to learn from this diving duo’s underwater exploration. There are sea creatures that dart along the ocean floor rather than swimming, fish that look like another species, hermit crabs that swipe shells, and so much more. Anyone would enjoy this coloring book as they fill in the black and white pictures while learning something new. I can only hope the Postma’s create more coloring books with such amazing images in the future!”
