The Republic of Nicaragua is a multi-ethnic country commonly referred to as “the land of lakes and volcanos.” Being one of the poorest countries in America, with 48% of the population living below the poverty line, it’s no surprise that Nicaragua has a colourful history of political unrest, dictatorship, and fiscal crisis. Today approximately ⅕ of Nicaragua is a protected area; either through national parks, nature reserves or biological reserves. In spite of its past turmoil, the country has risen from the ashes and is slowly becoming a popular tourist destination.
